Shooting Hopscotch on expired Polaroid film

I thought I had finished my last pack of Polaroid instant 600 film a couple of years ago. The original company has gone through a few changes in the last ten years. Next time you’re out shopping you might notice the famous Polaroid logo pushing cheap TVs or even blank media.

Before leaving for Hopscotch my wife and I found our old cameras in a box still sealed from our last move. Both cameras had a few photos left inside and we found a full unopened pack of film! The expiration date on the sealed pack says use before 03/05 but I figured I’d give it a try. As you can see from the example above, a shot looking out of our hotel window, the film doesn’t expose in the top corners and has a faded orange/red striped look. Some people may have tossed the rest in the trash but I packed it up and decided to see how musicians would respond. Over the course of the three day festival, I photographed lots of different musicians then handed them the slowly developing expired Polaroid with a Sharpie and I asked them to personalize it by drawing and/or scratching the image.

I plan to post them one at a time over the next few weeks. Think of it like waiting for the full post to develop… just like a Polaroid photo.
